PRR 5814, BH-50, #1 of 2, 1955
Description:
BYC. Here is the first of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred Kern that were taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5814 and #5824. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as passenger service BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as helper service BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5814 was built in September of 1947 and retired in April of 1962, while #5824 was built in May of 1947 and retired in April of 1962. They're serving as "pushers" on a mixed-cargo freight heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Partially visible is N-5A cabin #477634. ("PrrFan18n")
