CN 9003
Title:  CN 9003
Description:  Icy looking F3A unit built by EMD in May of 1948 for the Canadian National sits in the Elsdon Yard in Chicago on a frigid January day in 1971. Note on the back of the photo states "Canadian National F-3A #9003 stands in GTW's Elsdon Yard with ice all but concealing the lovers that appear on the carbody top instead of the usual grill work. Unit carries the usual roof top bell and yellow warning light, but has had her appearance changed radically with the addition of extra lovers to the car body. Simularily treated #9002 was the other end of the four unit lash-up which consisted of CN F-3B's #9001 and #9004 in the middle. These four units frequently run Port Huron, Michigan to Lang Yard, Toledo, Ohio on the D&TSL, but were making a welcome visit to Chicago on January 30, 1971." Jim Woznickzka photo

This was one of at least three such "Graveyard Trains." The final one merited a photo in the "Altoona Mirror" of 28 August 1959, captioned as follows: "A solid train of 15 old Pennsylvania Railroad [I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod"] steam locomotives [are shown here] moving around the famed Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. The engines, representing 3,211 tons of metal, were en route from Altoona to a Midwestern steel mill to be cut up for scrap. The Pennsy, which once owned as many as 7,630 steam engines, became completely dieselized or electrified more than two years ago."

PRR 9519, EH-15, 1949
Title:  PRR 9519, EH-15, 1949
Description:  FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 9 October 1949. Prominent here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9519 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EH-15's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9519 was constructed in January of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in December of 1962 after just 13 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-A set is serving as tail-end pushers on a westbound freight train ~ but once through one of the Gallitzin tunnels, they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." The number of the N-5C cabin car is not recorded. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.
