Like always, it starts with something else
Title:  Like always, it starts with something else
Description:  We were coming back from lunch, when we saw the 181 train stretched out down to the US 412 overpass, waiting in the siding. We had to drop some mail at the post office, then head home. He was still there 15 minutes later when we came back. My wife said I could drop her home and take off. I dropped her off, grabbed a bag of recycling, and away I went. I got this shot of the head end waiting south of Lincoln St after dropping the bottles. The detector went off right after, and the chase was on.

Going to meet a northbound
Title:  Going to meet a northbound
Description:  There was chatter on the radio about a northbound, so I went down to the station to see if I could get it on the way into town. It turned out to be an empty AEPX coal train behind a Belle and a UP unit, here approaching the Stilwell station.

Waiting
Title:  Waiting
Description:  When I went past the SR 100 crossing, the crew was cutting the train, which they typically do if theres going to be a long wait, and they dont want to block traffic. I ran up to the the head end to get this shot while I considered my next move. I didnt know it, but there was a southbound in the mix, which would make the decision easy.

Surprise
Title:  Surprise
Description:  I went back up to the north end of the siding, thinking the coal train would be underway momentarily, only to find the conductor cutting the train at the SR 51 crossing. Thats not good. Theyll be stuck here a while. Another promising chase thwarted by an outlawing crew. Not so fast. As I was heading up to the north end of town to consider my options, I saw a headlight in the distance. It turned out to be this southbound grain move, led by a pair of UP units.

On the creek
Title:  On the creek
Description:  The coal train rolls across Baron Creek under a Kodachrome sky. The sky was stunning this day. I was glad to get this shot; I didnt beat him by much, as US 59 between here and Stilwell is now under construction. This summers project is to turn it into a four lane, which will be welcome.

Wanted this shot for a long time
Title:  Wanted this shot for a long time
Description:  The next sequence is the coal train coming into Siloam Springs from the south. Its not an easy shot to get, as the lighting is good only about four months of the year, and you have to be on the US 412 overpass to get it. You also have to beat a northbound up from Watts if youre chasing, which means if you dont make all the lights in Siloam Springs, you might not beat it here. I did this day, with good results. Hes just about to cross Lake Frances Rd.

Grabbed him!!
Title:  Grabbed him!!
Description:  The coal train was taking the siding to meet a southbound, which turned out to be this 262 train, which hit the Davidson Rd detector as I was making my way to the shot. I had to take the long way around to get to the sun side, and was just pulling up to the crossing on Jefferson St as he showed. Not bad for a front seat of the car take.

Waiting on a meet
Title:  Waiting on a meet
Description:  Wed come back from lunch to find there were two trains in Siloam, a dodger, and what looked like a combined 262/180, but not where we could get the head end of either train. We headed home to drop off the leftovers, and get a bathroom break, and came back into town. The 262 was moving, so we took off for Watts. Once there, we saw this northbound 261 train waiting. Hed meet the 262 and the dodger before going north. Waiting on other trains would become the order of the day. He met another southbound at Siloam, a coal train at Gentry, and two southbounds at Noel. I wondered if he would ever get to Pittsburg.
